The recovery period can be a challenging and sometimes lonely time. Loneliness can be overwhelming occasionally so it is important to have a few ways to alleviate that feeling and get back to a sense or normality. These options are helpful for most people and can restore a sense of well-being.

1. Open Yourself Up To New Interactions

It might seem a bit overwhelming at first and perhaps even more so when you are in the recovery stage. It is important to make an effort to reach out and make new acquaintances. Even small talk is a step forward in the right direction.

2. Make An Effort to Initiate Conversations

Don't be afraid to start up a conversation. It doesn't have to be a deep topic. You can talk about the weather or a sports team but, just make the effort. By striking up a conversation you will be more likely to fulfill the need for contact and conversation. You might even make a new friend.

3. Have a Pen Pal

If you are reluctant to talk to others or if you just aren't ready, then you can always find a pen pal. You can do it the old fashioned way through snail mail or you can chat online. Some people find conversations online easier.

4. Read Entertaining Novels

Diving into a good book is an excellent way to forget about everything and alleviate feelings of loneliness. Books stimulate your brain and can relieve stress. You might just learn something along the way too.

5. Participate In Group Activities

Group activities are a great way to get your mind off of the struggles involved with recovery. It is also a great way to build positive relationships. Make sure the members of your group are a positive influence and make you feel comfortable.

6. Play Games

Playing board games, card games, or even video games are a great way to relieve feelings of loneliness. It is also a fun way to pass time when you feel anxious.

7. Find A New Hobby

Having a hobby is an effective way to relieve stress and focus your nervous energy when you become overwhelmed or are facing temptations. There is a world of options so try a few that sound interesting.

The recovery process takes time and determination. Feelings of loneliness can hamper the process so be sure to make efforts to participate in social activity. It is also helpful to read up on the recovery process and try tips that are offered on reputable sites that are dedicated to treatment and recovery. Challenge yourself to take positive steps towards building relationships and engage in activities that are calming and interesting.
