Dual Diagnosis Treatment that Addresses Underlying Co-Occurring Disorders

Are You Looking For A Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center?

Dual diagnosis, also referred to as co-occurring disorder, is a condition in itself where a person suffers from a substance addiction and at the same time from a mental disorder. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that 45% of people struggling with addiction also have a co-occuring mental disorder.

In the past, addictions and mental health illnesses were considered as separate disorders with a different therapeutic approach. While many people who suffer from mental health disorders also struggle with an addiction, these two conditions were treated separately.

Many people who suffer from both mental health issues and substance abuse problems are forced to choose between prioritizing treatment for their drug or alcohol problem, or getting help for their psychological issues. However, studies proved that an effective dual diagnosis treatment program should address both of these conditions at the same time using a holistic approach. According to studies conducted by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), combining strategies from the fields of psychiatry and addiction treatment can lower relapse rates and increase the chances of long-term recovery in dual diagnosis cases.

Unfortunately, many programs out there only offer one or the other. It was not common to find dual diagnosis treatment centers or integrated treatment plans that treat co-occurring disorders at the same time. And even if there are facilities that do provide some kind of psychiatric care, these services are often substandard or insufficient.

Anaheim Lighthouse understands how hard it is to get clean when you’re dealing with more than one problem at once. That’s why our facility offers specialized care for clients who need help with both substance abuse and mental illness issues.
