Mackenzie Phillips…From Addict to Drug Counselor
How does one battle substance abuse and come out on top? Mackenzie Phillips, 54, seems to have done it. Many people grew up watching her as Julie Cooper on CBS' 1970's sitcom "One Day at a Time" (ironic). She also starred in the movie "American Graffiti. She first tried cocaine at the age of 11, LSD at age 12 and even used with her father, John Phillips from The Mamas and The Papas, as a child. Not surprisingly, her life became troubled by drug abuse. She went into rehab 11 times. Fast forward to 2008, when she was arrested for possessing cocaine and heroin while going through a Los Angeles Airport security screening. She entered rehab and completed the program and as a result, the charges were dropped.
Perhaps one of the most successful ways to keep from falling back into drugs and alcohol is to be of service to fellow alcoholics. In fact, Mackenzie Phillips now counsels addicts at the Pasadena Recovery Center. She is quoted as saying, according to the director, "It's time for me to get grateful for what I have and share my recovery with other people." (Radaronline, March 26, 2014) The patients identify with her as she does with them. She has been through it all and has come out the other side and now she can guide them in ways she wishes she could have been guided during those years of abuse. Her role as a drug rehab counselor is going to make all the difference to some addicts. And really, in the end, her actions are only going to help her own recovery. Keep up the great work Mackenzie.
