By the end of this post, you should have a good understanding of popcorn lungs and whether or not they’re something to worry about when vaping.

What are popcorn lungs?

Popcorn lungs, another term for Bronchiolitis Obliterans (BO), is a rare condition that results from damage of the lungs’ small airways. This damage is typically caused by inhaling fumes or substances over a long period of time.

What happens is that a build-up of scar tissue develops in the lungs. This scar tissue can block the flow of air, which makes it hard to breathe.

Popcorn lung is most often associated with those working in industries where they are exposed to these harmful particles, such as popcorn manufacturing plants.

In fact, it was first discovered in workers in popcorn factories who were exposed to diacetyl. Diacetyl is an organic compound used as an artificial flavoring in some foods like popcorn and dairy products.

However, in recent years there has been an increase in cases of popcorn lung that are linked to vaping. This is because of exposure to many of the chemicals found in vape juice, such as diacetyl.

Does vaping cause popcorn lungs?

There are still a lot of unknowns about the long term effects of vaping, but one thing that is known is that many vape juices contain diacetyl – a chemical that has been linked to the development of popcorn lungs.

More research is needed to determine whether or not vaping actually causes popcorn lungs, but given that diacetyl is a known respiratory irritant, it's certainly plausible that vaping could increase your risk of developing the condition.

With the rise in numbers of people using vape products, there has also been a rise of cases of popcorn lungs being reported. This suggests that there may be a link between vaping and popcorn lungs, though more research is needed to confirm this.

How long does it take to get popcorn lung from vaping?

Popcorn Lungs From Vaping

If you are a long-time vaper, you might be worried about your risk of developing popcorn lungs. While the jury is still out on whether or not vaping causes popcorn lung, it's important to be aware of the potential risks.

Given that diacetyl is a known respiratory irritant, it's possible that long-term exposure to the chemicals in vape juice could increase your risk of developing popcorn lungs.

It can take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks after inhaling for symptoms of popcorn lung to appear. Once the symptoms do appear, they will likely get worse over time.

How do you know if you have popcorn lungs?

Are you wondering whether or not you are suffering from popcorn lungs? This is a common dilemma for people who are habitual vapers and are worried about the potential health risks.

The symptoms of popcorn lung can be difficult to distinguish from other respiratory conditions, such as bronchitis or asthma, so you should seek professional advice if you are concerned.

However, some common symptoms include coughing, wheezing, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to see your doctor right away.

There is currently no known cure for popcorn lungs. However, with early diagnosis and treatment, most people can improve their symptoms and live a relatively normal life. Consulting with a doctor can also help prevent further damage to the lungs.

This usually involves quitting vaping or smoking, and taking medications to help open up the airways. In some extreme cases, lung transplant may also be needed.

Avoiding Popcorn Lungs and Other Related Health Risks

Sadly, many people, especially teens, try out vaping without really being aware of the potential health risks. Aside from popcorn lungs, there is also a risk of getting addicted to the habit as vaping products contain nicotine.

Many vape devices are also being used to inhale more potent drugs like dab weed and other narcotics. This heightens the risk for developing addiction.

Now that you know about the link between vaping and popcorn lungs, as well as the other potential health risks, you can make more informed decisions about whether or not vaping is right for you.

If you or a loved one is struggling with substance abuse, help is available.
